For many of us, the minute someone says Ganesh Chaturthi, the next thought is of yummy little modaks arranged on a tray. You can’t blame them too – modaks are irresistible. If you are on a health spree, this is a must-try recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi. Healthy, delicious, sweet Ganesh modak. While modaks are a traditional festival special, there are many ways you can modify it, I have decided to give the basic modak recipe a twist by making it with ragi.
The health benefits of ragi are well known – they are rich in iron and calcium. Now your kids can get all these benefits as they enjoy their festive treats. The outer layer has ragi in it, but it tastes so soft and yummy. The once well-known cereal was totally absent in most people’s diets for almost three decades. This is quite surprising and unfortunate, considering the nutritive and therapeutic value of ragi for the human body

However, what needs complete attention along with the modaks is your health. While there are plenty of options that you can buy from the market, it is always beneficial to prepare them at home using specific ingredients that are good for health. This Ganesh modak recipe is simple, easy yet healthy and can be prepared in a giffy.
You sure want to gorge on those modaks, don’t you?
1. One cup of ragi flour
2. One cup of grated coconut
3. 45 Gm or 3 tbsp of Slurrp Farm Jaggery powder
4. 2 to 3 Tbsp of mix chopped nuts
5. One tsp of cardamom powder
6. One tsp + ½ tsp for greasing - Ghee
7. ¼ Tsp of salt
8. Water as needed
1. Prepare the stuffing – In a pan, add the grated coconut and jaggery powder and saute for some time until the mixture turns sticky and brown in color. Add the cardamom powder and chopped nuts, sauté for 1 -2 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool down.
2. Dry roast the ragi flour with ¼ tsp salt for 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and add the banana powder. Mix well.
3. Boil 1 cup water with 1 tsp ghee in it. Switch off the flame once the water starts boiling vigorously. Now, add spoon by spoon water to the ragi and banana powder until a nice dough is formed. Dough shouldn’t be sticky. Make small cylindrical balls of coconut mixture and keep aside. In a modak mould, stuff in small balls of the dough. Make a cylindrical well inside and stuff in the coconut mix. Seal the base with more dough. Steam the modaks for 10 to 15 mins.
